Social media is one of those things that, does anyone really know what it’s all about? The algorithm is a mystery to most and far-fetched beliefs and social media myths are passed around so easily.

I thought it would be useful to highlight a few of these so that we can see how our expectations compare to the reality of social media.

Expectation

I’ll never be able to think of what to post and it takes too much of my time anyway

Reality

Hmm, if you’re thinking this then you’re already putting barriers up. Am I right? But also, if this is you then here are some solutions:

  1. Split your tasks down in to 4 week periods – in week 1 plan, in week 2 create imagery, in weeks 3 and 4 write copy and schedule
  2. When you plan think about events that are coming up, any awareness days that you can leverage and consider whatever is going on in your life in general – you’ll probably find there is content everywhere

Expectation

I’m anxious because people I know will see my posts and think I’m talking rubbish

Reality

First of all it’s unlikely that even everyone on your follower list will see your content (sorry). And consider this, as long as you have planned what you are going to post based on what you know, your business, who your ideal customers are, what their pain points are and how you can solve them – why would anyone think you are talking rubbish. And if haters are gonna hate then simply remove them from your follower list.

Expectation

I’ll grow my followers really quickly and I need 10K of them (by next week). In fact I’ll buy followers and then I’ll look really successful

Reality

You want followers who are as valuable to you as you are to them. If you have created user personas based on your ideal customers / clients then 100 of these following you is worth so much more than 10,000 followers who are NEVER going to buy from you. And buying followers is a serious no-no.

Expectation

I will be able to market my business solely on social media.

Reality

I mean, this is unlikely and bear in mind that at any point in time any or all social media platforms could disappear. Which means you need to include social media marketing as part of your marketing strategy, not your only marketing strategy.

Consider other types of marketing such as networking and email marketing – even social media experts say that they get more revenue from email marketing than their social media organic posts.

Plus it’s worth including paid advertising such as Facebook Ads and Google Ads in your strategy.

Expectation

I’m here to be part of a supportive online community in which I can advise, educate and learn from because I’m careful with who I follow and who I allow to follow me.

Reality

Yessssssssssss. That is exactly what it’s all about. Creating or joining a community in which you can add value to and take benefits from. It’s all about the know, like and trust.

So it seems that a lot of expectations can be managed by looking at reality. And the reality is that you need to have a strategy. Have you got one?
