On Monday the 4th of October, 2021, it became very apparent that social media is a MASSIVE part of our lives.

Whether we use it for connecting with others, marketing our businesses, educating and sourcing information or selling, it is entwined in modern life.

So what happens when it stops working?

Do we panic? Do we welcome the break?

The end of the spectrum you found yourself at, if you are a business and you use social media as part of your marketing strategy, was probably determined by one thing:

How you are able to contact your customers.

Have you put all your eggs in one basket, or do you have options?

The 2 best ways to ensure that you’re not left completely high and dry IMHO are:

Have your own website

If you have your own website you ‘own’ the space. You create the content: page content, blog posts, sales pages. If social media disappeared forever then you still have content for people to see. Just make sure that you update and back it up regularly.

TOP TIP – create a task in your project management system to go in to the back end of your website each month and update plugins, themes etc

Build and maintain your email list

Access to other people’s email inboxes is an incredibly valuable asset to have. Even with social media being available, businesses report that more conversions happen because of email marketing. So start building your list now.

  • Identify a good email marketing tool – I use Mailerlite, it has loads of functionality even on the free option.
  • Create landing pages and sign up forms and add them to your website – you can create these within the email marketing tools usually
  • Identify a sustainable email routine – don’t tell people you’ll send out a daily email when you don’t have time for it
  • Add a link to your email signature suggesting people sign up

Thankfully when Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp stopped working I did have access to other social media platforms, so setting up accounts on other platforms could also be something to consider. You don’t have to use them as part of your strategy, they would be more of a safety net.

Make sure everything is backed up. Here is some information on how to back up or download data:

Facebook

Instagram

WhatsApp

LinkedIn

Twitter

Hope that helps!
